Muminki w pogoni za kometa (2010 )

One day Moomintroll notices that something strange has happened in the Moomin Valley - everything is grey; not just the sky and the river, but the trees, the ground, the Moominhouse, too! Moomintroll runs to ask the well-read Muskrat if he knows what is happening. Muskrat declares that this is the way things tend to look like before the earth faces an awful fate coming from the sky. With the help of his father, Moominpappa, Moomintroll and his worried friends build the best raft ever and start on a challenging journey to the observatory. The wise professors there must know what the threat from space is all about! The trek is not easy. The brave entourage, Moomintroll, Sniff and Snufkin face many obstacles, yet also meet new and old friends. The film was edited, compiled and reframed from the material originally filmed for the Polish stop motion animated series Opowiadania Muminków (1977) in 1977-1982. The series was mostly filmed in layers, with Moomin puppets separated from the other animated objects painted on glass plates in the foreground and background. The producer Tom Carpelan says that the original material suited well for stereoscopic 3D conversion since it's almost like the series was intended to be that way. "Moomins and the Comet Chase" was one of the first feature films produced in 3D in Scandinavia (and the first in Finland). The other was Danish film Балбесы 3D (2010) (Olsen Gang Gets Polished), released in the same year. See more »

In the opening credits of the Finnish language version, Tove Jansson's original novel is misspelled as "Komeetta ja pyrstötähti". "Komeetta" and "pyrstötähti" are synonyms, both meaning "comet" in Finnish - so the nonsensically misspelled title would translate as "The Comet and the Comet". The novel's correct Finnish title is "Muumipeikko ja pyrstötähti" (Moomintroll and the Comet). See more »

A unique and entertaining treat for all ages!

We decided to check out "Moomins and the Comet Chase" as it was a new release and I remember loving a Moomins book I had as a child! It did not disappoint.

When Muskrat explains that mysterious changes in Moominvalley spell doom and gloom, the curious Moomintroll and friends set off to find out the truth from the scientists at the observatory.

The characters are delightful, despite the somewhat dark and existential themes. For the most part I think this film can be enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds. The messages of striving for knowledge and facing challenges with bravery are universal.

Unsurprisingly, the voice cast is superb and give the perfect Moomins tone to the film. The animation style is different than what is commonly seen, which I enjoyed as it gave the movie a unique feel.

Overall I would recommend this film to just about anyone!
