‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’ bold new poster hits out at censor board

Award-winning feminist drama ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha ’ is gearing up to hit screens next month, and the makers have released a brand-new poster which is quite bold. The poster, which shows the middle finger in the form of a lipstick, can be rightly interpreted as its reply to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) which initially refused to certify it saying its “story is lady oriented” and contains “sexual scenes, abusive words, audio pornography.”
The official Twitter handle of ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’ shared the poster along with the release date which is on July 21. “A dash of red can spark off a rebellion. Catch #LipstickUnderMyBurkha in cinemas on 21 July! #LipstickRebellionBegins,” read the tweet.
It is not just the ‘lipstick’ middle finger which is bold, but the tag line also reads ‘It takes balls to be a woman’ with the word ‘balls’ crossed.
The film directed by Alankrita Shrivastava and produced by Prakash Jha . was initially denied a certificate. A portion of the letter by a CBFC official giving their reasons for denial read, “The story is lady-oriented, their fantasy above life. There are contentious sexual scenes, abusive words, audio pornography and a bit sensitive touch about one particular section of society.”
The makers then approached the then appealed to the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT), which directed the CBFC to clear it with an ‘A’ certificate after snipping a few scenes featuring sexual content. However, the release was stalled as it didn’t get a distributor to take the film to the screens.
Finally, Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor decided to present the film and it will be released under Alt Entertainment, a subsidiary of Balaji Motion Pictures.
Starring Konkona Sen Sharma and Ratna Pathak among others, ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’ chronicles the secret lives of four women of different ages in a small town in India and their different kinds of aspirations. The film has won several awards in various film festivals, including the Oxfam Award for the Best Film on Gender Equality at the Mumbai Film Festival and the Spirit of Asia prize at the Tokyo International Film Festival.
The film is all set to release in India on July 21.
